Introduction / History

The Lakon are an indigenous people group of Vanuatu, living on Aoba (also called Ambae) Island in Penama Province. Their community has long been shaped by life in volcanic highlands and coastal villages, with oral tradition and local custom forming the basis of their shared history and identity. The Lakon language is part of the Oceanic branch of the Austronesian language family, reflecting connections with other island peoples while maintaining distinct linguistic and cultural traits within northern Vanuatu's tapestry of diversity.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Lakon live in small villages both inland and near the island's coastal fringes, where daily life revolves around subsistence gardening, fishing, family cooperation, and strong communal bonds. Gardens planted with taro, yam, cassava, and bananas provide staple foods, and fishing from surrounding reefs and coastal waters supplements diet and daily rhythms.

Homes are typically constructed from locally available materials such as wood, bamboo, and thatch. Extended families often live near one another, reinforcing deep ties of support and shared responsibility. The Lakon language is used for everyday communication within the community, while Bislama may be used for broader interaction with other groups on Aoba and beyond.

Access to formal infrastructure such as healthcare facilities, secondary education, and reliable transportation is limited, especially outside of larger centers on the island. Travel between villages often depends on walking paths or small boats in coastal areas.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Lakon people identify with Christianity, and church life plays an active role in village gatherings, worship, and community rhythm. Christian forms of worship provide a foundation for many community relationships and celebrations.

At the same time, traditional spiritual beliefs connected to ancestors, customary practices, and the natural environment continue to influence how some individuals understand spiritual realities. These traditional elements can coexist with Christian practices, resulting in a blended spiritual landscape rather than one wholly grounded in biblical teaching.

There is no confirmed complete Bible translation available in the Lakon language, and Scripture portions remain limited. This restricts direct and consistent engagement with the full message of God's Word in the language they use most within the community.

What Are Their Needs?

The Lakon need clear and faithful teaching of the gospel that leads to genuine spiritual transformation and a deep understanding of biblical truth, rather than a form of Christianity shaped by tradition or habit.

A significant need is Bible translation and Scripture access in the Lakon language. Greater availability of God's Word in the language spoken within the community would support discipleship, strengthen believers, and help establish a foundation for mature faith.

There is also a need for faithfully grounded local leaders who can teach Scripture clearly, disciple believers within their context, and guide communities toward lives shaped by the gospel rather than mixed belief systems.

Practical challenges also affect daily life. Limited access to healthcare, education, and transportation can hinder both physical well?being and opportunities for sustained spiritual growth and community development.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Lakon would come to a clear and saving faith in Jesus Christ, firmly grounded in Scripture rather than cultural or mixed religious practices.
Pray for Bible translation efforts and Scripture distribution in the Lakon language so that God's Word becomes accessible and understandable in their everyday speech.
Pray for the raising up of faithful, Scripture?centered leaders who can teach, disciple, and shepherd others effectively.
Pray that traditional spiritual influences would give way to a deep trust in God's Word and Christ's saving work.
Pray for improved access to healthcare, education, and transportation that supports daily life and community growth.
Pray that the gospel would spread throughout homes and villages, bringing lasting transformation among the Lakon.
