Malay is an ethnic group based in the country of Malaysia. They are different than "Malaysians," which refers to anyone from Malaysia, a multi-ethnic democracy. Often Malays are lumped in with the other ethnic groups when they migrate to other countries, but they are very different. Malay is a specific language. They are staunchly Muslim, and Malays go to great lengths to make sure they are not reached with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The situation is very different for ethnic Chinese, etc. who have migrated.
Malays are in a total of 22 countries including Germany.
Many Malay families in Germany maintain close-knit relationships, even if living far from extended relatives. They often emphasize respect for elders and strong family bonds. Parents typically balance traditional Malay values—such as politeness, modesty, and Islamic practices—with the norms of German society. At home, Malay or Bahasa Malaysia is often spoken, though children may become fluent in German quickly. English is also common in mixed or international households.
Malays in Germany often work in academia and Research (many come as students and stay for postgraduate work). Those who don't return to Malaysia find jobs in healthcare and engineering, business, or hospitality.
They adapt to Germany's punctual, structured work environment while maintaining a more communal and relationship-oriented approach typical of Malay culture.
Entrepreneurship: Some Malays run small businesses, such as restaurants offering Malaysian cuisine.
Malay social life in Germany often revolves around Malaysian student associations, Islamic centers or mosques, and cultural events like Hari Raya (Eid) celebrations and Malaysian Independence Day gatherings.
While they integrate into German society, they often maintain cultural identity through food, dress (e.g., traditional attire for special occasions), and language. They mix with other Malaysians, Southeast Asians, and international communities, but also build friendships with Germans through work or school.
As mentioned before, Malays are staunchly Sunni Muslim. They are not open to other ways of viewing salvation, or religious dedication.
Malays in Germany need to hear the gospel from Christians who are faithfully living the Christian life. There is freedom of religion in Germany, but they face much social pressure to conform to Islam.
Pray for workers who are genuinely living the Christian life, to reach Malays in Germany with the life-giving gospel.
Pray that soon there will be Malay disciples making more disciples in Germany and England.
