The Melpa are one of the major highlands peoples of Papua New Guinea, centered in the Mount Hagen area of Western Highlands Province in the Wahgi Valley. They belong to the densely settled highland societies of New Guinea, where generations of clan-based communities have been shaped by fertile valleys, intensive gardening, ceremonial exchange, and strong kinship structures. Their language is Melpa, a Papuan language widely spoken in and around Mount Hagen and among several related highlands tribes.
The Melpa live in the rich highlands environment around Mount Hagen and the Wahgi Valley, where villages and hamlets are spread across cultivated land, ridges, and valley floors rather than concentrated in a few large settlements. Ordinary life has long centered on intensive small-scale agriculture, especially root crops and garden produce, with pigs playing a major role in household economy, social obligation, ceremonial exchange, and status. Homes are typically simple village houses built from local materials, while roads and market access are greater here than in many remote parts of Papua New Guinea, especially near Mount Hagen, though local foot travel and clan-based land ties still remain important. Family and clan loyalties are strong, and community life is shaped by reciprocal labor, marriage ties, church life, and traditional patterns of alliance and exchange. Their language in ordinary life is Melpa, though Tok Pisin and English are also used more broadly in town, school, and wider public life.
The Melpa are identified as Christian, though some traditional ethnic religious influence may remain.
The Melpa need strong biblical discipleship so that Christian profession is matched by genuine repentance, biblical conviction, and obedience to Christ. Where there is a strong Christian base, the need is for healthy churches, faithful shepherds, sound teaching, and families that live out the gospel clearly. They need protection from nominal Christianity, compromise, and any lingering attachment to older spiritual loyalties. Because they are a large and influential highlands people, they also need renewed zeal to carry the gospel beyond their own community and to reach other ethnic groups in Papua New Guinea with faithful witness.
Pray that the Melpa would grow in genuine repentance, biblical clarity, and joyful obedience to Jesus Christ.
Pray that pastors, elders, and other local leaders would teach Scripture faithfully and lead with humility and courage.
Pray that any remaining attachment to older spiritual practices would be fully surrendered to the lordship of Christ.
Pray for strong Christian families, healthy churches, and enduring discipleship among the Melpa.
Pray that the Melpa would actively reach out to other ethnic groups with the gospel and become a faithful witness beyond their own community.
