The Oku people live in the Northwest Region of Cameroon, especially in the mountainous areas of Bui Division, where the Oku fondom consists of numerous villages surrounding Mount Oku.
Their language, Oku—also called Ebkuo, Ekpwo, Ukfwo, or Bvukoo—is a Central Ring Grassfields Bantu language used widely in the community and taught in some schools. The Oku trace their cultural heritage to the Tikar peoples, maintaining an enduring tradition of kingship under a revered Fon and preserving rich artistic and craft traditions.
Oku life revolves around extended families, communal farming, and close-knit village structures. Many families practice subsistence agriculture on steep highland terrain, growing crops such as beans, maize, and potatoes, and are known for specialized bee-keeping that produces the region's distinctive white honey.
Community events, festivals, and traditional ceremonies remain central to social life. Their rich cultural heritage is expressed through woodcarving, oral storytelling, vibrant attire, and public gatherings often held under the guidance of the Fon.
Many Oku identify with Christianity, especially Protestant traditions. Scripture is available in the Oku language, including a New Testament translation and additional biblical media resources such as the JESUS Film. These resources provide Oku speakers access to Scripture in a language they understand.
The Oku community benefits from strengthened discipleship, continued biblical teaching, and ongoing development of local Christian leadership. Access to Scripture in their own language supports long-term spiritual growth.
Socially, families value improvements in education, sustainable livelihoods, and preservation of their cultural heritage amidst modern pressures.
Pray for believers in Oku communities to grow in spiritual maturity and live out the gospel in daily life.
Pray for strong, biblically grounded local leaders who can teach, guide, and encourage others.
Pray for the Oku to take part in God's mission by sharing the gospel with neighboring peoples.
Pray for continued access to Scripture and additional discipleship resources in the Oku language.
Pray for God's provision in family life, education, agriculture, and community wellbeing.
