Introduction / History

The Saxwe Gbe are one of the Gbe speaking peoples of southern Benin. Their language, Saxwe (also called Saxw-gbe or Sahouè), is part of the larger Gbe language family spoken across Benin and Togo. They live mainly in the Atlantique, Couffo, and Mono departments of Benin, where they have long-established farming and fishing communities.

Historically, the Saxwe Gbe developed alongside other Gbe groups, sharing cultural ties, trade networks, and similar social structures. Their communities traditionally organized themselves around extended families and village leadership. Over time, they have maintained their language and cultural identity while interacting with neighboring ethnic groups.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Saxwe Gbe families rely on farming, fishing, and small-scale commerce. Common crops include maize, cassava, yams, and vegetables. In areas near lakes and lagoons, fishing is an important source of income and food. Daily meals typically include maize porridge, cassava dishes, plantains, fish, and sauces made with palm oil, vegetables, or peanuts. Food preparation is often shared among family members, especially during special occasions.

Family life centers on extended households. Elders guide family decisions, and younger members contribute to daily work. Community cooperation is common, especially during planting and harvest seasons.

Celebrations often include music, drumming, and dance. Naming ceremonies, harvest festivals, and community gatherings strengthen social bonds. Traditional clothing and local foods are important parts of these events.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Many Saxwe Gbe people practice forms of Christianity, while traditional beliefs remain influential in daily life. Traditional religion includes honoring ancestors, recognizing a creator deity, and interacting with various spirits through rituals and ceremonies. Some communities rely on spiritual specialists for healing, protection, or guidance.

Christian churches are present in Saxwe areas, but traditional practices often continue alongside church involvement. Islam is present in the region but is not common among the Saxwe Gbe.

What Are Their Needs?

Many Saxwe Gbe communities need improved access to clean water, healthcare, and stable economic opportunities. Rural areas may face challenges such as limited medical facilities, seasonal food insecurity, and inconsistent school attendance.

Spiritually, some communities have limited access to discipleship, scripture resources, and long-term Christian support in their own language. Continued translation work, local leadership development, and relational outreach can help meet these needs.

Prayer Items

Believe that God will open a way for improved access to clean water, healthcare, and reliable food sources in Saxwe Gbe communities.
Ask God to establish stronger educational opportunities that support children and strengthen families.
Call on God for spiritual openness and for local believers to grow in understanding and faith.
Pray for a ministry of discipleship that will enable effective communication in the Saxwe language that will build and strengthen ministries.
Pray that soon they will become Christ bearers to other groups that lack an adequate gospel presence.
