The South Kewa are an indigenous people of the Southern Highlands region of Papua New Guinea. They belong to the broader Kewa cultural and linguistic family that lives throughout parts of the highlands. Their communities are rooted in mountainous valleys and fertile upland areas where villages have developed around extended family groups. The South Kewa speak a form of the Kewa language, which belongs to the Engan language group of the highlands. Over generations their identity has been shaped by kinship networks, local traditions, and close ties to the land.
South Kewa communities are typically organized around villages made up of extended families and clan relationships. Gardening is central to daily life, with families cultivating staple crops such as sweet potatoes and other vegetables in small garden plots. Pigs are also important in many highland societies and may be raised for food, exchange, and community events. People often travel by foot along mountain paths between villages, markets, and neighboring communities. Cooperation within families and clans plays an important role in farming, building homes, and carrying out community responsibilities. Trade and interaction with nearby groups have long been part of life in the highlands, allowing communities to exchange goods and maintain relationships across valleys.
Many South Kewa identify with Christianity, and churches are present in numerous communities. Christian teaching, worship, and fellowship are part of village life for many families. At the same time, in some places, traditional ideas about spiritual forces or ancestral influences may still shape how people understand illness, misfortune, or protection. These beliefs are sometimes held alongside Christian practice. Within this context, faithful biblical teaching and discipleship continue to be important so that believers can grow in a clear understanding of the gospel and the saving work of Jesus Christ.
South Kewa communities benefit from continued discipleship that strengthens believers in their knowledge of Scripture and their walk with Christ. Encouraging and equipping local church leaders is important for guiding congregations with sound biblical teaching. Access to Scripture and teaching resources in the language people understand best helps families engage deeply with God's Word. In addition, support for education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods can strengthen communities and create opportunities for long-term well-being.
Pray that South Kewa believers will grow in spiritual maturity and develop a deep love for God's word.
Pray for pastors, teachers, and church leaders to be strengthened with wisdom and faithful biblical understanding.
Pray that families and young people will follow Jesus Christ wholeheartedly and build strong Christian homes.
Pray that the churches among the South Kewa will remain united and committed to sharing the gospel with neighboring peoples.
