Introduction / History

The Tepeuxila Cuicateco are an indigenous people of Oaxaca, Mexico, part of the Mixtecan cluster, speaking a tonal Oto-Manguean language (Tepeuxila Cuicatec) still used in daily life. Historically, Cuicatec peoples occupied a wider region but are now concentrated in mountainous areas like Tepeuxila where language and traditions persist.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life is rural and agricultural, centered on maize, beans, and small-scale farming. Families often function in close-knit, community-oriented structures with local leadership influenced by elders. Celebrations blend Catholic feast days with traditional agricultural cycles, and food reflects staple crops like corn, beans, and chili peppers.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most identify as Christian, often within folk Catholic traditions mixed with indigenous beliefs. Traditional cosmology includes reverence for natural spirits and agricultural symbolism tied to Christian figures and festivals. They have a strong gospel presence, but it's very easy for them to put their faith in ancestral or nature spirits.

What Are Their Needs?

Greater depth of biblical understanding would strengthen existing Christian identity and reduce syncretism. Expanded access to Scripture in their heart language can deepen discipleship. They have a complete New Testament in the Tepeuxila Cuicateco language, but many cannot read it. Economic stability and preservation of language and culture would support community health.

Prayer Items

Pray for strong, biblically grounded churches and leaders.
Pray for a complete Bible translation and wide distribution of the Scriptures, discipleship materials, and outreach resources in the Tepeuxila Cuicateco language.
Ask God to provide sustainable livelihoods and protect their language.
Pray that Tepeuxila Cuicateco believers become active in sharing Christ locally and beyond.
