Introduction / History

The Twumwu are one of the Tikar subgroups living in the Grassfields region of Cameroon. They belong to the larger Tikar people, whose language is part of the Bantoid branch of the Niger-Congo language family. The Grassfields have long been home to numerous kingdoms, each preserving its own customs, leadership, and identity while sharing cultural ties with neighboring peoples.

According to Tikar oral traditions, their ancestors migrated into the region generations ago before establishing the chiefdoms that continue to shape community life today. Although the Twumwu share many traditions with other Tikar communities, they maintain their own local identity and language variety within the broader Tikar heritage.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Twumwu Tikar families depend on agriculture for their livelihood. They cultivate crops such as cassava, maize, plantains, bananas, cocoa, coffee, and sugar cane while also participating in local markets and small-scale trade. Farming seasons help determine the rhythm of community life.

Extended families provide support across generations, and traditional leadership continues to play an important role in local affairs. The Tikar are well known for their artistic traditions, especially carved masks and other works that reflect the history and identity of their communities. Music, storytelling, festivals, and ceremonies also help preserve cultural heritage.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Twumwu Tikar generally identify with Christianity, although traditional religious beliefs continue to influence some families and communities. Older customs related to ancestors, ceremonial practices, and spiritual protection may remain alongside Christian worship.

Traditional Tikar beliefs recognize a Creator, but many people benefit from deeper biblical teaching that helps them understand the fullness of God's revelation through Jesus Christ. Churches grow stronger when believers are discipled to follow Christ and put all their trust in him.

What Are Their Needs?

The Twumwu Tikar need mature Christian leaders who can faithfully teach scripture and disciple believers within their own cultural setting. Churches are strengthened when faith is rooted in God's word rather than inherited as a cultural tradition.

Communities also benefit from educational opportunities, stable livelihoods, and faithful believers who demonstrate Christ's love through their families and daily work.
