Introduction / History

The Yerakai are an Indigenous people group of Papua New Guinea, living in a remote inland region shaped by forested terrain and relative geographic isolation. Their communities are small and close?knit, with settlement patterns historically determined by access to land suitable for gardening and daily survival.

The Yerakai speak the Yerakai language, which continues to serve as a core marker of identity and a primary means of passing on shared history and values. For generations, knowledge was transmitted orally through stories, instruction, and communal memory. More recent contact with outside influences, especially Christian mission efforts, has played a decisive role in shaping Yerakai spiritual life and community organization.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life among the Yerakai is communal and relational. Extended families live near one another, sharing work, food, and responsibility. Daily life is shaped by cooperation rather than individual achievement, and decisions are commonly discussed at the family or village level.

Subsistence gardening provides most of what families need to survive. Root crops, fruits, and greens are cultivated in nearby gardens, while hunting and gathering supplement daily meals. Work is steady and physically demanding, closely tied to the rhythms of the land and seasons. Meals are simple and often shared, reinforcing bonds of care and mutual dependence.

Church gatherings have become central to Yerakai social life. Worship services, prayer meetings, and fellowship events provide opportunities not only for spiritual growth but also for encouragement, teaching, and community cohesion. Music and singing are especially meaningful expressions of shared faith.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Yerakai are entirely Christian, and Christian faith is the defining spiritual identity of the community. Belief in Jesus Christ is openly confessed and publicly practiced, shaping moral values, family relationships, and responses to hardship. Churches play a central role in village life, serving as spaces for worship, teaching, reconciliation, and mutual support.

What Are Their Needs?

Despite strong faith and community cohesion, the Yerakai face serious physical challenges. Medical facilities are limited or distant, leaving injuries, infections, and maternal health concerns insufficiently addressed. Access to clean water and basic sanitation is inconsistent, increasing vulnerability to preventable disease.

Educational opportunities are minimal. Most schooling, where available, is limited to early levels, and there are few pathways for advanced education or vocational training. This restricts leadership development and long?term resilience, both for the community and for the church. Improved infrastructure, healthcare access, and education would significantly strengthen Yerakai well?being.

Prayer Items

Thank God for the Yerakai's strong Christian identity and for the lasting fruit of gospel faithfulness among them.
Pray for continued spiritual growth, that Yerakai believers will be firmly grounded in Scripture and live out their faith with humility and love.
Ask the Lord to raise up wise and servant?hearted leaders who will disciple others and guide the church into the future.
Pray that the Yerakai church will joyfully send workers and support gospel witness among neighboring peoples who do not yet know the Lord of lords.
