Introduction / History

The Amat people are also known as the Amanats. Though most are in eastern India, about ten percent live in Nepal. In India they speak Hindi and in Nepal they speak Maithili. Like many Hindu communities, the Amat people place themselves higher in the caste system than others would. They consider themselves to be Sudras, members of the fourth and lowest of caste clusters. Others would consider them to be members of a group outside the caste system.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Ahat people are primarily farmers, though some of them are artists, day laborers and carpenters. Popular crops grown throughout Nepal include rice, maize and wheat.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Like many Hindu groups, the Amats' lives are crippled by astrology, which they believe determines their destiny. Astrologers help them determine auspicious dates for important events like weddings. They worship Hindu gods such as Thakurani and Mahadev. Hi

What Are Their Needs?

The Amat people need for Christians to come to them who will treat them with love and respect, regardless of how other people view them through the caste system. They need somebody to come to them and share the gospel with them in love and for the Lord to

Prayer Items

Pray for Christians to go to the Amat people, treat them with dignity and respect, and share the gospel with them.
Pray the Lord will grant repentance and faith to the Amat people.
Pray that entire Amat families will soon turn to Christ, and that this will multiply outwards as families reach other families with the gospel.
