Introduction / History

The Ghandharv are Hindus. In Uttarh Pradesh they speak Bhojpuri and Hindi and read and write in Devanagari. They are not vegetarians and eat wheat and rice as their staple cereals. They are mostly monogamous. There are birth and marriage rituals among them. The dead are cremated. Dancing is an important part of their experience. Some work in cultivation.

In Bihar, the Gandharv can marry again if divorced. On the death of the father, sons and unmarried daughters inherit the property with the oldest son becoming in charge of the home. Some are laborers and some office workers. They have a community council to look after them and settle disputes. They have a low literacy level, so the gospel will need to be given in oral form too. Most do not own land.

In Gujarat, the Gandharv are vegetarians. Sons inherit the property. They have land. Many of them are literate.
