Introduction / History

Christianity arrived in the first century, possibly through Thomas the Apostle's influence from nearby Kerala. Nestorian Christians lived on the island by the 5th century under royal patronage, and Catholicism spread widely after Portuguese arrival in 1505, followed by Protestant efforts from the Dutch. Today, Christians in Sri Lanka primarily include members of Sinhalese, Tamil, and Burgher ethnic groups.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many Christians work in fishing, agriculture, garment factories, or urban services like teaching and trade. Families often follow nuclear structures with both parents working, emphasizing education for children. Celebrations include Christmas with carols and midnight mass, Easter feasts, and weddings blending Western and local customs. Food features rice, curries, fish ambul thiyal, and hoppers, with festive sweets like kavum.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They primarily follow Catholic or Protestant traditions, worshiping Jesus Christ as Savior and reading the Bible. Practices include Sunday services, sacraments like baptism and communion, and prayer. Some blend local customs with faith, while others adhere strictly to church teachings

What Are Their Needs?

Their primary needs are better access to quality education and healthcare amid economic challenges. Clean water and stable jobs would improve daily life. Spiritually, they need stronger community discipleship and protection from social tensions.

Prayer Items

We pray for economic stability and job opportunities for Christian families.
We declare unity among Christian denominations despite ethnic differences.
Pray for boldness in sharing faith amid cultural pressures and for protection from discrimination and spiritual growth through reading and applying the word of God.
Pray for Sri Lanka's Christians to become a powerful force for God's blessings in this island nation.
Pray for many to take up the call to reach other religious communities with the abundant life only Jesus Christ can offer.
