Introduction / History

The Uchoi Tipurus live in northeastern India and Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, they speak Usoi, and in India, they speak Kok Borok.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Among the Uchoi Tipuru, the eldest son who resides at home inherits the family property. If a son leaves to find work elsewhere, he loses his inheritance.

They use slash-and-burn agricultural methods, yet they are known to grow some of the world s best pineapples. Though they also grow rice, which is the staple food in South Asia, they also grow various kinds of fruits, melons, sweet potatoes, maize, and cotton. For livestock, they have goats, water buffalos, pigs, and chickens. They use the cotton to weave clothes and other useful goods.

The Uchoi Tipurus have their own unique forms of dance, music, and festivals.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They are primarily Christian though many depend on the spirit world for their needs. Animistic practices are still part of their community lives. Those who live in Hindu India are often mistaken for Hindus.

What Are Their Needs?

Partly because of their remote location, the Uchoi Tipurus have few if any markets outside of their immediate community.

Prayer Items

Pray the hearts of the Uchoi Tipuru people would be stirred to hunger after God, to drink of living water.
Pray for family-based movements to Christ to soon transform Uchoi Tipuru society, blessing them spiritually and economically.
Pray for the Lord to move in the hearts of local believers to give up their own rights and sacrifice their lives to see the Uchoi Tipuru people blessed by the work of Jesus Christ, the only savior.
