Introduction / History

The Severn Ojibwa in Canada are part of the Oji-Cree peoples of northern Ontario and northern Manitoba. They belong to the northern Ojibwe world that developed in the broad zone between Ojibwe peoples to the south and Cree peoples to the north. Their historical setting is tied to remote northern river and lake regions, where communities were shaped by kinship networks, seasonal movement, and long-standing connections to hunting, fishing, and trade routes across the boreal forest.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Severn Ojibwa commonly live in remote northern First Nations communities in Ontario and Manitoba, often in places linked by rivers, lakes, winter roads, and air travel rather than dense road networks. Ordinary life in these regions is shaped by small community settings, strong family ties, and a mix of modern settlement life with continuing ties to the land through hunting, fishing, trapping, and seasonal harvesting. Their language, Severn Ojibwa, also called Oji-Cree or Anihshininiimowin, is used in their communities and is one of the northern varieties of the broader Ojibwe language family. It is commonly written in Cree syllabics in many northern communities. English is also widely used in school, government, and broader public life.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Severn Ojibwa identify outwardly as Christian. Even so, outward Christian profession does not automatically mean deep biblical understanding, spiritual maturity, or genuine conversion. In communities with long exposure to Christianity, there can still be a need for stronger discipleship, sound doctrine, and faithful church life so that belief is rooted in Scripture rather than inherited identity alone. Scripture is available in their language.

What Are Their Needs?

The Severn Ojibwa need believers who are firmly grounded in the gospel and who live out biblical truth with clarity and perseverance. They need faithful pastors, elders, and teachers who can strengthen churches with sound doctrine and guard against nominal Christianity. Strong Christian families, enduring discipleship, and healthy local congregations are important so that the next generation is formed by God's Word rather than by cultural habit alone. Because they have a strong Christian base, they also need a renewed missionary burden so that believers among them would carry the gospel faithfully to other ethnic groups.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Severn Ojibwa would not rest in outward Christian identity alone, but would grow in genuine repentance, faith, and obedience.
Pray that the Lord would raise up and strengthen faithful pastors, elders, and teachers among them who handle Scripture rightly.
Pray for strong Christian homes and for the next generation to be discipled in truth.
Pray that churches among the Severn Ojibwa would remain spiritually healthy, biblically grounded, and enduring.
Pray that believers among the Severn Ojibwa would carry the gospel faithfully to other ethnic groups.
