Introduction / History

The Lala-Bisa people are a Bantu ethnic group primarily residing in Zambia, with some communities also in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They live in regions spanning Central, Eastern, and Northern provinces, including areas around Serenje, Mkushi, and along parts of the Luangwa River and Luapula regions. They speak Lala-Bisa, a Niger-Congo Bantu language closely related to Bemba and mutually intelligible with neighboring dialects. Their cultural background traces to migrations from the Luba-Lunda kingdoms in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo centuries ago, leading to settled agrarian communities with strong ties to land, clans, and shared traditions among related groups.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Lala-Bisa maintain a rural, community-oriented lifestyle centered on subsistence farming. Families grow staple crops such as maize, millet, groundnuts, and vegetables in fertile plateau soils, often using traditional methods supplemented by hunting, fishing, and raising livestock. Extended families form the core of society, with households including multiple generations and strong emphasis on kinship obligations during life events like marriages, initiations, and funerals. Community life thrives through cooperation in fields, village gatherings, and mutual support. Daily rhythms follow seasonal agricultural cycles, with work balanced by social interactions, storytelling, and rest. Festivals, such as harvest celebrations featuring music, dance, intricate attire, and communal feasting, strengthen bonds and honor cultural heritage, often involving elaborate ceremonies that express joy and continuity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Lala-Bisa predominantly follow Christianity, with elements of traditional beliefs and respect for ancestors present alongside Christian faith in some communities. Scripture is available in forms they can understand, including through related languages or ongoing efforts in Lala-Bisa.

What Are Their Needs?

Many Lala-Bisa communities face challenges common to rural agrarian life, such as improving access to education, healthcare, and sustainable economic opportunities. Spiritually, believers grow through consistent biblical teaching, discipleship, and mature leadership within churches. As faith deepens, opportunities increase for Lala-Bisa Christians to share the gospel actively with less-reached peoples in surrounding areas and beyond.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Lala-Bisa would experience fresh encounters with Jesus Christ, leading to vibrant church growth, deeper unity, and passionate pursuit of God's Word.
Pray for effective engagement with Scripture in their language, so families and individuals can hear and respond to the gospel clearly in their heart tongue.
Pray for Christian homes among the Lala-Bisa to shine as examples of godly living, raising children who love and follow Christ faithfully.
Pray that the Holy Spirit would burden mature believers to step into mission, becoming disciple-makers and witnesses to unreached groups nearby and farther afield.
Pray for God's provision over their physical needs, including abundant harvests, good health, and peaceful communities that testify to His goodness and draw others to faith.
