Introduction / History

The Belantas are divided into subgroups, all of which speak the Balanta language. One of the subgroups is the Nyakra.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Nyakra Balantas are fishermen, herders, and cultivators. They grow millet, rice, peanuts, cashews, and fruit for a cash crop. They love to celebrate traditional holidays.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They believe God is far away. They try to reach him through spirits and sacrifices. Although Catholicism has been partially accepted, Islam is strong and practiced along with spirit worship.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kentohe Balantas need to put all their faith in Jesus Christ. The spirit world offers them nothing, and Jesus gave his all.

Prayer Items

Pray for an indigenous church planting movement among the Balanta people.
Ask God to break the ties of traditional spirit worship when they see what Jesus has for them.
Pray that medical and educational needs will be met.
