Introduction / History

The Kathu people, also known as the Gelao, live primarily in the mountainous regions of Guizhou and Yunnan provinces in southern China. Their language, Kathu, is part of the Kra branch of the Tai-Kadai language family, though many Kathu now speak Mandarin or local Chinese dialects in daily life. The Kathu have a long history in this region, with roots that trace back centuries. Over time, they have experienced significant cultural changes due to contact with neighboring ethnic groups and government assimilation policies. Despite these influences, the Kathu have preserved many of their traditional customs and oral histories, which are passed down through generations.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Kathu people live in rural villages, where agriculture is the main source of livelihood. Families typically cultivate rice, corn, and vegetables on terraced fields, and some raise livestock such as pigs and chickens. Daily life is shaped by the rhythms of planting and harvest, with family members working together to meet their needs. Extended families often live close to one another, providing mutual support and sharing responsibilities. Community life is marked by traditional festivals, weddings, and other celebrations, which are important occasions for music, dance, and feasting. The Kathu diet is simple, relying on locally grown produce and staple grains.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Kathu people traditionally practice animism, believing that spirits inhabit the natural world and influence daily life. Rituals and ceremonies are performed to honor these spirits and seek their protection, especially during important agricultural events or times of illness. Ancestor veneration is also a significant part of their spiritual life, with offerings made to deceased relatives to ensure their favor and guidance. In some areas, elements of Chinese folk religion and Buddhism have influenced Kathu beliefs and practices. The message of Jesus Christ is largely unknown among the Kathu, and there are very few followers of Christ within their communities.

What Are Their Needs?

Many Kathu villages are located in remote, mountainous areas, making access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities difficult. Children often have limited schooling, and families may struggle with poverty and health challenges. The Kathu have little exposure to the gospel, and most have never heard the good news of Jesus Christ in their own language. There is a great need for workers who can share the message of Christ's mercy and hope in a way that is understandable and relevant to the Kathu people. In addition to physical needs, the Kathu need the spiritual transformation that only comes through faith in Jesus.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Kathu people would have improved access to education and healthcare, especially in isolated villages.
Ask God to send workers who are equipped to share the gospel in the Kathu language and culture.
Pray that the hearts of the Kathu would be open to the message of Jesus Christ, and that new believers would be strengthened in their faith.
Pray that the Kathu would one day join the global body of Christ, sharing the hope of the gospel with others.
