Introduction / History

The Khaonh live in a wide central region of East Cambodia, as some of their villages share a border with southwestern Vietnam to the group's east. With the city of Stung Treng residing just north of the general population's area of residence, Kratié serves as the provincial capital and largest city for the Khaonh people group to easily access along the Mekong River. The Khaonh compromise a singular ethnic group within the larger Mon-Khmer people cluster. The Khaonh people group survive currently within rural, non-urbanized settings, if not in slightly larger villages. Because of their proximity to the Mekong River, the Khaonh people group prefer to emphasize agricultural practices that enable traditional forest foraging.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Khaonh people group typically speak Mel-Khaonh, which remains as an endangered indigenous language with a lower number of speakers only found in Cambodia. The Khaonh family units congregate in raised wooden houses either in smaller villages or upon shared family farms in rural locations. The Khaonh people group primarily contribute towards harvesting agricultural products, with rice serving as the dormant cash crop developed in this region of Cambodia. As the Khaonh preserve their land for their livelihood physically and economically, active government initiatives are partnering with this people group's villages with preserving plots of land belonging to the Khaonh. Access to such resources can be limited entirely and/or delayed temporarily for the Khaonh people group living in solitude either by choice or merely to survive. With Cambodia's three decades of sustainable development as a nation, the Khaonh people group are beginning to adapt modern practices, benefiting from available government-provided resources and opportunities.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Resembling other nearby indigenous people groups, the Khaonh people group exclusively revered and followed animist traditions, giving their worship to both spirits and animals. The Khaonh previously participated in constructing spirit houses, which give a perceived respect to guardian spirits who protect the areas where the houses are constructed. Since the 1970s, a mixture of forced Communism and integrated Buddhism have both challenged and morphed the beliefs of the Khanoh. Despite such radical and oppressive religious influences, God has revealed himself throughout the Khaonh. A continuously increase in the number of the Khaonh community members hearing, accepting, and sharing the gospel truths of Jesus Christ has become a newly popular trend.

What Are Their Needs?

Safety remains the greatest need for the Khaonh people members' individual livelihood and overall preservation in Cambodian society. The shocking annihilation of too many Cambodians with the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979 stunted growth among all Cambodian people groups. Undiscovered landmines remain dormant in unexcavated areas, as well as active human trafficking rings of bondage are now hindering at accelerated rates across Cambodia. With these two factors causing slower development throughout Cambodia, poverty still plagues the Khaonh people group. Khaonh Christians have also been perceived and thus persecuted as pariahs by their unbelieving community members. Following how God has called and equipped them, these Christians transparently admit that they struggle to adapt in their own villages as well as most neighboring societies while sharing the gospel truths.

Prayer Items

Intercede for God's continual protection to be experienced and then be testified by the Khaonh Christians who model lifestyles matching God's Word, so more yet-to-believe Khaonh people group members can hear, receive, and then share the gospel truths with others too.
Request for God's supernatural presence to soften the hearts of the unbelieving Khaonh people group members, so that they can freely refrain from worshipping spirits or Buddha and thus can seek a relationship with God the Father, accept Jesus Christ as Savior, and receive daily guidance from the Holy Spirit.
Pray for God to inspire, encourage, and rise leaders among the Khaonh Christian communities who share the gospel truths compassionately and consistently, so the centuries of strongholds be broken and demonic spiritual forces must finally flee to never return.
Partner with God by interceding for the Khaonh Christians to recognize their role with investing in the lives of younger believers through effective and long-lasting discipleship.
