The Sri Lanka Moor are the largest Muslim ethnic community in Sri Lanka. Their origins are commonly traced to Arab merchants who began trading with the island between the eighth and fifteenth centuries and eventually settled there, marrying local women and establishing permanent communities. Over the centuries, additional influences from South Indian Muslim groups contributed to the development of the community. Today, the Sri Lanka Moor possess a distinct ethnic identity that combines Islamic faith with elements of South Asian and Arab heritage.
Most Sri Lanka Moor speak Tamil as their primary language, although many also speak Sinhala and English. Their Tamil dialect contains numerous Arabic loanwords and reflects the community's unique historical development. The Sri Lanka Moor are found throughout the island but are especially concentrated in the Eastern Province and in major urban centers. Throughout Sri Lanka's history, they have been known for their involvement in trade, commerce, and maritime activities.
The Sri Lanka Moor live in both urban and rural settings. Historically, many families were involved in trade and commerce, and business remains an important part of community life today. Others work in agriculture, fishing, manufacturing, education, government service, healthcare, transportation, and professional occupations. In the Eastern Province, many families continue to depend on farming and fishing, while those in larger cities often participate in retail and commercial enterprises.
Family and community relationships are highly valued. Extended family networks provide support during marriages, business ventures, and times of need. Hospitality is an important cultural virtue, and family gatherings frequently center around meals and religious celebrations. Traditional foods often include rice, curries, seafood, and dishes influenced by both Tamil and Arab culinary traditions. Weddings, religious festivals, and community events play a significant role in preserving cultural identity and strengthening social bonds.
The Sri Lanka Moor are overwhelmingly Sunni Muslims. Their religious life centers on belief in Allah, reverence for Mohammad as God's prophet, observance of daily prayers, fasting during Ramadan, charitable giving, and participation in the wider Muslim community. Mosques serve as important centers for worship, education, and community life. Islamic festivals such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are widely celebrated.
Historically, Sufi influences have played a role in the religious life of many Sri Lanka Moor communities, and reverence for saints and shrines remains present in some areas. At the same time, reform movements have encouraged stricter adherence to Islamic teachings. Despite these differences, Islam remains the defining feature of Moor identity. Most Sri Lanka Moor have had little opportunity to consider the biblical message that forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God come through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ rather than through religious observance.
The Sri Lanka Moor need greater access to the gospel through trusted relationships, Scripture resources, and faithful Christian witnesses who can communicate biblical truth with wisdom and respect. Although a complete Tamil Bible is available, many have never personally studied the Scriptures or engaged in meaningful conversations with committed followers of Jesus Christ.
Practical needs vary by region. Some communities face challenges related to employment opportunities, economic development, education, and recovery from periods of political instability and ethnic tension. Families in rural areas may struggle with agricultural and fishing-related economic pressures, while urban families face the demands of a rapidly changing economy. Above all, the Sri Lanka Moor need opportunities to encounter Christ through God's word and through believers whose lives demonstrate His grace, truth, and transforming power.
Pray that the Sri Lanka Moor would have opportunities to hear a clear presentation of the gospel and come to understand who Jesus Christ truly is.
Pray that God would raise up faithful workers who will build genuine relationships among the Sri Lanka Moor and communicate biblical truth with wisdom, humility, and love.
Pray that the Sri Lanka Moor would be adopted through the People Group Adoption program so that churches and believers will commit to ongoing prayer, outreach, and future gospel engagement among them.
Pray that any existing Tamil-speaking believers in Sri Lanka would be strengthened in their faith and equipped to share the gospel with the Sri Lanka Moor and other neighboring peoples.
