Introduction / History

Namshi is a subgroup of the Dowayayo. They only live in Cameroon.


What Are Their Lives Like?

The Namsi Dowayoyo are farmers who grow cotton, kapok, peanuts and corn.

Their art includes handmade dolls which girls carry on their backs like real babies. They talk to the dolls and feed them. The Namsi Dowayoyo believe this helps prepare girls for child rearing. These dolls are made mainly from wood, but they also include cowrie shells, metal, leather and plant fiber.


What Are Their Beliefs?

They are mainly animistic, believing that everything has a spirit, including plants and inanimate objects.


What Are Their Needs?

The Namsi Dowayoyo need modern medicine and schools in their homeland.
