The Karolanos Magahat are an Indigenous people of Negros Oriental in the central Philippines. They are associated with the broader Magahat group and are related to the Karolanos communities noted in the region. Their primary language, following Joshua Project's naming, is Binukidnon, Southern.
Their language—also called Magahat or Southern Binukidnon by linguists—is a Central Philippine language spoken in the rugged mountains of southern Negros. They live in areas around Mount Arniyo near Bayawan, upper Tayaban, Tanjay, Santa Catalina, and Siaton.
Historically, the Magahat and Karolanos have lived in scattered upland communities, maintaining distinct speech forms and cultural ties that differ from surrounding lowland Visayan populations. Their isolation has helped preserve aspects of their identity, even as Cebuano and Hiligaynon influence their language.
The Karolanos Magahat traditionally rely on farming, hunting, and gathering within the forested mountainsides of Negros. Their fields are often small, carved from slopes through intense manual labor. Root crops, rice, corn, forest vegetables, and gathered forest products shape much of their diet.
Families often live in dispersed clusters rather than large villages, a pattern common among mountain communities. Children learn early to assist in farming and foraging. Household decisions often involve extended family, and elders retain an important role in maintaining community order and oral knowledge.
Celebrations commonly revolve around agricultural cycles and family milestones. Food sharing, dance, and storytelling strengthen communal bonds, and some festivals blend local customs with influences from surrounding Visayan culture.
Most Karolanos Magahat follow an ethnic belief system centered on spiritual forces tied to forests, land, and ancestral memory. Some have been influenced by Christian teaching, and there is a Christian presence among them. Their outlook acknowledges unseen powers, and their daily lives reflect respect for nature and the spiritual world.
From a Bible-believing Christian perspective, Jesus Christ is the only One who can bring hope, direction, and transformation to every community, and He desires to bless the Karolanos Magahat with his truth.
Mountain isolation limits access to education, consistent healthcare, and stable income. Many families depend on unpredictable agriculture and foraged food sources, making them vulnerable to storms, soil depletion, and changes in forest availability.
Reliable transportation and communication remain challenging in upland areas, restricting trade and emergency assistance. As communities encounter outside influences, there is also a need for grounding in biblical truth to help them navigate change with wisdom and hope.
Pray for improved access to education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Pray for protection of their land and environment so families may thrive despite the challenges of mountain living.
Pray for spiritual openness and for the message of Jesus Christ to bring lasting peace and renewal.
Pray that existing Christian fellowships among the Karolanos Magahat will send workers to neighboring communities without a gospel witness.
