Introduction / History

The Nass-Gitksian in Canada are the Nisga'a people of the Nass River Valley in northwestern British Columbia. They are an Indigenous people of the broader Tsimshianic cultural and linguistic world, closely related to the Gitxsan. Their history is deeply tied to the Nass watershed, where river, forest, and coastal access shaped their life for generations. Today, their historic homeland remains centered on the Nass Valley, with major village communities including Gitlax?t'aamiks, Gitwinksihlkw, Lax?g?alts'ap, and Ging?olx.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Nass-Gitksian are rooted in the Nass River Valley, where life has long centered on village communities connected by the river system, surrounding forests, and access toward the Pacific coast. Many still identify strongly with the four main Nisga'a villages in the valley, while others also live in nearby regional towns and urban communities outside the valley. Daily life in the Nass Valley combines modern community infrastructure with enduring Indigenous social patterns, including strong family ties, traditional leadership structures, and local attachment to land and river. Fishing remains especially important in the valley, and road access now links the villages to Terrace and the wider region, while some communities also maintain marine access. Their language, Nisga'a, is still used within the community, alongside English in public life and education.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Nass-Gitksian identify outwardly as Christian, and the group has a strong Christian base. Even so, broad Christian identity does not automatically mean spiritual depth, sound doctrine, or living biblical faith. In communities with a long Christian presence, there can still be a need for deeper discipleship, stronger biblical understanding, and faithful churches marked by genuine repentance and obedience. Scripture is available in their language.

What Are Their Needs?

The Nass-Gitksian need believers who are deeply rooted in the gospel and shaped by biblical conviction rather than by inherited Christian identity alone. They need faithful pastors, elders, and teachers who can strengthen churches with sound doctrine and help guard against nominal Christianity. Strong Christian homes, serious discipleship, and enduring local congregations are needed so that faith is passed on clearly and lived out consistently. Because they have a strong Christian base, they also need a renewed missionary burden so that believers among them would carry the gospel faithfully to other ethnic groups in British Columbia and beyond.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Nass-Gitksian would not rest in outward Christian identity alone, but would grow in genuine repentance, faith, and obedience.
Pray that the Lord would strengthen pastors, elders, and teachers among them to lead with biblical clarity and conviction.
Pray for strong Christian homes and for the next generation to be discipled in truth.
Pray that churches among the Nass-Gitksian would remain spiritually healthy, biblically grounded, and enduring.
Pray that believers among the Nass-Gitksian would carry the gospel faithfully to other ethnic groups.
