Introduction / History

The Nande, also known as the Yira, are a Bantu-speaking people whose primary homeland is in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, with a smaller population living in western Uganda, particularly in areas near the Rwenzori Mountains and border districts such as Bundibugyo and Kasese. They speak Nande, a Bantu language that serves as a strong marker of ethnic identity and cultural continuity.

The Nande have a long history of settlement in the Great Lakes region, marked by trade, agriculture, and interaction with neighboring peoples. Cross-border movement has been common due to trade, family ties, and periods of conflict in eastern Congo, resulting in Nande communities that maintain close connections across national boundaries. Despite displacement and political instability in parts of their broader homeland, the Nande have preserved strong social structures rooted in clan identity, land stewardship, and shared history.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many Nande live in rural or semi-rural communities where agriculture and trade are central to daily life. Farming provides the primary livelihood, with households cultivating crops such as bananas, beans, maize, cassava, coffee, and cocoa, depending on altitude and location. The Nande are also known for their strong entrepreneurial culture, and small-scale commerce and cross-border trade play an important role in household income. Family life is organized around extended kinship networks that provide social support, economic cooperation, and moral guidance. Daily life can be demanding, as access to quality healthcare, education, and infrastructure remains uneven, particularly in border and rural areas. Nevertheless, the Nande value hard work, education, and community responsibility, which contribute to resilience amid economic and social challenges.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Traditional Nande beliefs historically centered on a supreme creator alongside reverence for ancestors and spiritual forces believed to influence health, fertility, and success. Ritual specialists and customary practices were used to restore harmony when spiritual imbalance was believed to occur.

Christianity is now widespread among the Nande, and many identify strongly as Christians, with a range of church traditions present in their communities. At the same time, elements of traditional worldview can persist beneath Christian identity, particularly fears related to curses, spirits, or ancestral displeasure. While the gospel is broadly known and accepted, not all believers have access to consistent, biblically grounded discipleship that emphasizes salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone and a life transformed by His lordship.

What Are Their Needs?

The Nande in Uganda face physical needs related to poverty, population pressure on land, limited healthcare services, and unequal access to quality education. Border communities are especially affected by economic instability and the effects of regional conflict, even when violence occurs across national lines. Improved agricultural support, healthcare access, and educational opportunities would strengthen long-term community stability.

There are strong Christians among the Nandes. They need to take up the task of being Christ's ambassadors to those who deny the finished work of Christ.

Prayer Items

Pray for improved access to healthcare, education, clean water, and sustainable livelihoods among Nande communities in Uganda.
Ask God to strengthen agricultural productivity and small-scale enterprises, bringing economic stability to families.
Pray for peace and protection for border communities affected by regional insecurity and displacement.
Pray that Nande believers would grow in a deep, biblical understanding of salvation through Christ alone, free from fear of spiritual powers and syncretistic beliefs.
Ask God to establish strong, Christ-centered local churches with well-trained and humble leadership.
Pray that Nande Christians would use their networks and mobility to participate actively in God's global mission, sharing the gospel with peoples who still lack access to it.
