Introduction / History

The Camarines Agta — also known as the Manide or Kabihug, the name they use for themselves — are a Negrito people and one of the oldest indigenous groups in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. Their communities are found in Camarines Norte province in southern Luzon, with smaller related groups extending into western Camarines Sur and the eastern fringe of Quezon province. The Camarines Agta are considered among the earliest inhabitants of the Philippine archipelago, predating the Austronesian migrations that shaped most of the country's current ethnic landscape by many thousands of years.

Their language, Manide — also called Agta, Camarines Norte — is an Austronesian language of the Northern Philippine subgroup. It is one of the more vital Agta languages in the country, spoken as a first language by most community members and transmitted with notable robustness to younger generations. Tagalog and Bikol serve as bridge languages to the surrounding lowland communities. Scripture is available to the Camarines Agta in languages they understand, including Filipino.

Despite their long presence in the region, the Camarines Agta have historically lived on the margins of Philippine society, facing land displacement, limited access to government services, and social discrimination. Growing recognition of indigenous peoples' rights in recent decades has brought some improvement, and provincial observances of Indigenous People's Day in Camarines Norte have helped raise public awareness of their heritage and needs.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Camarines Agta have traditionally been semi-nomadic, and while many communities now live in more settled locations, a subsistence-oriented way of life remains central to their daily rhythms. Farming of root crops — particularly camote and cassava — alongside rice cultivation where land allows, provides a dietary foundation. Hunting in the forest and gathering of wild plants, fruits, and medicinal herbs supplement both food and healthcare. Traditional knowledge of herbal medicine is a valued community asset passed between generations.

Extended family networks anchor social life, and the role of elders and indigenous community chieftains in guiding decisions remains significant. Church gatherings have become a meaningful feature of community life for many Camarines Agta, shaping the weekly and annual rhythms of families who have come to faith. Community leaders have encouraged younger generations to hold onto their cultural identity while pursuing educational opportunities that open doors to wider participation in Philippine society. School attendance has grown, and indigenous students are advancing toward educational milestones previously out of reach for their families.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity has taken meaningful root among the Camarines Agta, with a significant portion of the community now identifying as Christian. This represents a genuine work of the gospel among a people who were historically overlooked by the broader mission enterprise in the Philippines. Mission organizations have invested in outreach among the Agta peoples of Luzon more broadly, and the fruit of that labor is visible in the Camarines Agta community today.

Traditional animistic beliefs rooted in the spirit world — including beliefs about supernatural beings, the spirits of the natural environment, and the role of spiritual practitioners in mediating healing and misfortune — formed the historic backdrop of Camarines Agta spiritual life and may continue to influence how some community members understand the unseen world alongside their Christian faith. The call before Camarines Agta believers is to allow the full truth of Scripture to define their faith, finding in Jesus Christ the authority over every spiritual power and the freedom that only he can give.

What Are Their Needs?

The Camarines Agta continue to face significant physical needs. Access to healthcare in their forest and upland communities is limited, and treatable illnesses take a disproportionate toll on families with little access to clinics or hospitals. The protection of ancestral domain from land encroachment remains an ongoing concern. Educational opportunity, while improving, is still constrained by geographic isolation, language barriers, and the social discrimination that has historically pushed Agta children to the margins of the school system. The Manide language, while more robust than many Agta languages, would benefit from continued investment in literacy materials, discipleship resources, and Scripture translation to ensure that the Word of God is accessible in the heart language of the people.

Spiritually, the growing Christian community among the Camarines Agta needs ongoing discipleship, capable church leaders, and deeper access to Scripture in their mother tongue. Their story — from a marginalized forest people to a community with a meaningful gospel presence — is a testimony to the grace of God and a foundation from which to launch outward. The Philippines is home to many peoples who have not yet heard the gospel clearly, and Camarines Agta believers are uniquely positioned to serve as witnesses across cultural boundaries, carrying the good news to other indigenous communities in Luzon and the Bicol Region who remain unreached.

Prayer Items
