Introduction / History

The Northeastern Krumen are a West African people living in the southwestern coastal region of Côte d'Ivoire. They belong to the broader Kru peoples cluster, a collection of related ethnic groups whose communities extend across parts of Côte d'Ivoire and neighboring Liberia. Their language, Krumen (Pye), is part of the Kru branch of the Niger–Congo language family and is closely related to other languages spoken by neighboring Kru groups.

Historically, Kru-speaking peoples along the West African coast were known for their maritime skills and often worked as sailors and laborers on trading vessels. Over time, many communities remained settled in coastal and forest regions where they maintained their own languages, social structures, and local traditions.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many Northeastern Krumen communities live in rural areas near forests and coastal environments. Village life often centers on farming, fishing, and the use of local natural resources. Crops such as rice, cassava, yams, and plantains are commonly cultivated in the region, and families often work together in agricultural tasks that support the household and community.

Extended family relationships are an important part of social organization. Elders are typically respected for their wisdom and experience, and community decisions may involve the guidance of village leaders or respected family heads. Cultural traditions are preserved through storytelling, music, and communal gatherings that reinforce shared identity and heritage.

Language also plays an important role in daily life. The Krumen language is part of a wider group of Kru languages spoken across the border region of Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia, helping connect related communities through shared linguistic and cultural roots.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Traditional ethnic religions remain an important influence among many Northeastern Krumen communities. These beliefs often include respect for spiritual forces connected with nature, ancestors, and the unseen world. Rituals and traditional practices may be used to seek guidance, protection, or blessing in important areas of life.

At the same time, Christianity is also present among the Northeastern Krumen, and some people identify with Christian churches. In places where the gospel has been shared, Christian believers gather for worship, prayer, and fellowship.

What Are Their Needs?

The Northeastern Krumen would benefit from continued access to clear biblical teaching and discipleship resources in their own language. When people can hear and read Scripture in the language they use daily, it becomes easier for them to understand and apply God's Word.

Training for local church leaders is also important so that pastors and teachers can guide their communities with wisdom and faithfulness. As believers grow in their knowledge of Christ, they can become a strong witness within their families and villages.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Northeastern Krumen would clearly hear and understand the message of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Pray for believers among them to grow in spiritual maturity and faithfulness to God's word.
Pray for pastors, teachers, and Christian workers who will disciple new believers and strengthen local churches, sending them out to reach the nations.
Pray that scripture and gospel resources in the Krumen language will be widely used and understood.
