Introduction / History

Their language, Patamuna, is a Carib-based language. They live in three countries: Guyana, Venezuela, and Brazil. Most live in Guyana. Those in Guyana also speak English as a trade language. The Patamonas are a subgroup of the Kapons.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Patamonas are farmers who grow squash, bitter cassava, yams, sweet potatoes, chili peppers, and sugarcane. The bitter cassava is fermented to make an alcoholic drink. They eat lots of fish, which they can catch in nearby rivers.

They steam their meals by wrapping them in leaves and setting them near a fire. One of their favorite dishes is a Guyanese pepper pot dish called tuma.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Although animistic religion remains strong, most Patamonas are Christian, typically adhering to either Roman Catholicism or Evangelicalism.

What Are Their Needs?

The Patamonas need the Holy Spirit to revive their churches, giving them spiritual refreshment.
