The Biko people are a small, localized ethnic community living primarily in the interior and coastal foothills of Catanduanes, an island province in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. Their identity is shaped by a blend of indigenous roots, Bicolano cultural influence, and the rugged island. The Biko trace their origins to early Austronesian settlers who populated Catanduanes long before Spanish arrival. Oral tradition speaks of small kinship-based settlements scattered across the island's forested mountains, where families relied on swidden farming, fishing, and forest gathering. Spanish colonization brought Catholic influence, but many Biko communities remained semi-isolated, preserving older customs, animistic practices, and clan-based leadership.
Many families depend on agriculture and fishing. Coconut farming is especially important, along with rice, root crops, and abaca fiber production. Coastal communities often fish daily, while others run small businesses or work in local government or education. Economic opportunities can be limited, so some people migrate to cities or overseas for work. Family is central to daily life. Households often include extended relatives, and respect for elders is strongly emphasized. Decisions are frequently made with the welfare of the whole family in mind, and relatives provide support during hardships. Fiestas honoring patron saints are major community events, blending religious devotion with music, food, and social gatherings.
Most Biko people identify culturally with Christianity due to centuries of Spanish influence, yet many still hold traditional animistic beliefs beneath the surface. They may pray to God or attend church, but they also honor ancestral spirits, nature beings, and protective guardians believed to inhabit forests, rivers, and mountains. Healers, spirit mediums, and ritual specialists play important roles in addressing illness, misfortune, or community concerns. Many Biko blend Christian practices with older rituals, creating a syncretic belief system that shapes daily life, decision-making, and spiritual identity. Others, however, have a firm faith in Jesus Christ which they need to share with everyone.
They need greater economic opportunities and sustainable livelihoods. Most need access to education and job training, especially in rural areas. Frequent typhoons leave them vulnerable; they need disaster preparedness.
