Introduction / History

The Fulani people have been living in Ghana for over a century. Despite some of them becoming Ghanaian citizens, the government and common people still consider them foreigners.

Like many peoples, the Fulanis are divided by dialect. In Ghana, the Fulanis speak the Western Fulani dialect.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Western Fulani are mainly herders, moving from place to place with their cattle, sheep and goats. This nomadic lifestyle is central to their identity and values. Women play a vital role in managing household duties, milking cattle and engaging in small-scale farming and trade.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Islam is essential to the Western Fulani's identity, with most adhering to Sunni Islam. Their practice of Islam is often blended with traditional beliefs and rituals.

What Are Their Needs?

Western Fulanis face several challenges, including limited access to education and health care due to their nomadic lifestyle. They have difficulty transitioning from traditional pastoralism to other livelihoods.
