Introduction / History

The Pamunu are a small Sinhalese sub-group traditionally associated with landholding and agriculture. Historically, they were part of the feudal system in Sri Lanka, often serving as village leaders or landowners under the Kandyan kingdom. Over time, modernization and land reforms have reduced their distinct social role, but they still maintain cultural traditions tied to their heritage.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Pamunu families typically live in rural villages, though some have migrated to urban areas for work. Agriculture remains central to their livelihood, with rice cultivation being the primary occupation. Family life is close-knit, and extended families often live near each other. Celebrations revolve around Buddhist festivals such as Vesak and Sinhala New Year, which include rituals, traditional games, and sharing of sweet foods like kiribath (milk rice) and kavum (oil cakes). Daily meals often feature rice, vegetables, and fish curry. They value education, and younger generations increasingly pursue jobs in government or private sectors.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Pamunu people are predominantly Theravada Buddhists. Their faith emphasizes the teachings of the Buddha, meditation, and merit-making through acts such as temple offerings and almsgiving. Religious life is deeply woven into their culture, with temples serving as community centers. While Buddhism shapes their worldview, many also hold folk beliefs and consult astrologers for important life decisions. There is a small Christian minority among them.

What Are Their Needs?

The Pamunu face challenges related to economic stability and modernization. Rural communities often struggle with limited access to healthcare and quality education. Social changes have led to a loss of traditional identity, creating uncertainty for younger generations. Spiritually, most have never heard a clear presentation of the gospel, and there are few believers among them who can share Christ's love in culturally relevant ways.

Prayer Items

Pray that Pamunu hearts will be open to the message of Jesus Christ and that God will raise up workers to share his love among them.
Ask God to bless efforts to translate and distribute Scripture and Christian resources in the Sinhala language.
Pray for improved access to education and healthcare, especially in rural areas.
Intercede for Pamunu believers to grow in faith and become part of the mission force reaching Hindus and Buddhists in Sri Lanka.
