Introduction / History

The Katubung Agta, also known as the Isarog Agta or Inagta Partido, are an indigenous Negrito people of the Bicol region in the Philippines. They are among the oldest inhabitants of the Philippine archipelago, descended from the earliest human populations to settle the islands long before the later Austronesian migrations that reshaped much of Southeast Asia. Their ancestral homeland centers on Mount Isarog, a prominent stratovolcano rising in the heart of Camarines Sur province in southeastern Luzon, whose slopes and surrounding forests have sustained their way of life across many generations.

The Katubung Agta belong to the broader family of Aeta, Agta, and Dumagat peoples found across Luzon, each group distinguished by its own language and local traditions. Their own language, known to linguists as Agta, Katubung, is an Austronesian language that shows deep influence from neighboring Bikol languages while retaining features distinctive to Negrito speech. The language is today critically endangered, with fluent speakers confined largely to the elderly generation. Younger community members have increasingly shifted toward Bikol and other regional languages as a result of intermarriage, land loss, and growing integration with surrounding lowland communities. This linguistic shift reflects broader pressures that have transformed Katubung Agta life over the past several generations.

Unlike many Philippine groups, the Agta peoples had little sustained interaction with Spanish colonial authority, having retreated into mountainous and forested areas where colonial reach was limited. The Katubung Agta of Mount Isarog thus maintained a degree of cultural continuity through the colonial period, though the twentieth century brought accelerating change through migration, deforestation, and development.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Katubung Agta have traditionally lived as semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers in the forests and river valleys surrounding Mount Isarog. Hunting, fishing, gathering, and small-scale forest farming have long formed the heart of their subsistence. Both men and women participate in these activities, with women known across Agta communities for their skill in spearfishing and hunting alongside their dogs. Wild animals, forest plants, fruits, honey, and river resources have sustained the community, while forest products such as resin and timber have historically been exchanged with lowland neighbors for rice and other goods.

Mount Isarog holds deep significance for the Katubung Agta. They regard the mountain and its forests not simply as a resource but as a living, sacred space — a place of spiritual meaning woven into their identity as a people. The forests of Isarog are extraordinarily rich in biodiversity, and the Agta's intimate ecological knowledge of the mountain reflects a relationship built over countless generations of careful observation and dependence.

Life for the Katubung Agta today is shaped by the pressures of a changing world. Intermarriage with Bikol and other lowland communities has become common, and many who identify with the Agta community participate in a more settled lifestyle than their forebears. Some engage in seasonal agricultural labor, small-scale trading, and other activities that reflect increased contact with the surrounding lowland economy. Access to formal education, healthcare, and legal recognition of ancestral land remains an ongoing concern for indigenous communities of this kind throughout the Bicol region.

The community's traditional oral knowledge — stories, ecological wisdom, and cultural memory — faces serious risk as the language in which it was carried is no longer being learned by children. Efforts to document and preserve this heritage have been undertaken by Filipino academic institutions, though much work remains.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Katubung Agta's traditional spiritual life is rooted in a deep sense of the sacred in the natural world. Mount Isarog is regarded as the dwelling place of spirits and protective deities, and the forest is understood as a living space inhabited by unseen powers. Traditional Agta spiritual practice in the broader region includes the role of shamans who serve as intermediaries between the community and the spirit world, using prayer, herbal medicine, and ritual to address illness and maintain harmony with the natural order. While specific details about current Katubung Agta religious practice are limited, this broader spiritual orientation has historically characterized Negrito communities across Luzon.

Some of the Katubung Agta identify with Christianity, as is broadly true of many Agta communities in the Philippines. Christian mission activity reached various Agta and Aeta peoples of the Philippines during the twentieth century, and the influence of that outreach is reflected in the religious identity of the community today. Reliable detailed information about the specific depth and character of Christian practice among the Katubung Agta is limited, and careful, prayerful engagement remains the most appropriate response.

What Are Their Needs?

The Katubung Agta face a range of urgent needs both practical and spiritual. The near-extinction of their language represents a profound cultural loss, and with it the risk of losing irreplaceable oral traditions, ecological knowledge, and a sense of distinct communal identity. The pressures of land encroachment and economic marginalization continue to affect the wellbeing of the community, and access to healthcare and education remains uneven.

Prayer Items

Pray for the believers among the Katubung Agta, that they would grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ, be grounded in the scriptures, and become a strong and faithful witness within their community and beyond.
Pray for the raising up of mature, godly leaders from within the Katubung Agta community, men and women who know the word of God and can shepherd their people with wisdom and love.
Pray for Katubung Agta families, that parents and grandparents would pass on not only their cultural heritage but a living, vibrant faith to their children and grandchildren.
Pray for the preservation of the Katubung Agta's cultural identity and their deep knowledge of the natural world, and that this heritage would be held within a community grounded in the love of Christ.
Pray for the practical wellbeing of the Katubung Agta, including access to healthcare, protection of their ancestral land, and educational opportunity for their children.
Pray that the Katubung Agta would become senders and ambassadors of Christ to communities that have not yet heard his name.
