They are located in 2 settlements: 1) a cluster of villages on either side of the Walewale-Gambage road, in Nalerigu district; 2) a strip 60 kilometers from north to south along the eastern border of Mole game reserve, near Daboya in Dagombe district. The settlements are separated by about 70 kilometers. They are farmers whose main crop is yams, millet, guinea corn, maize and beans. Their compounds are occupied by extended families under an elder, occasionally young people live in a smaller compound nearby. A typical compound is 20 huts, most of them round and thatched. Compounds are about 200 meters apart.
The Tampulma were once part of the Sisaala but a quarrel over traditional sacrifices resulted in a split and a Tampulma migration to their present locations. Since the 1960s churches have been working with the Tampulma. The Baptists have been able to appoint Tampulma workers which has aided their progress. Unfortunately few Tampulma have become Christians in the South. Mosques and Muslim praying places in the 2 Tampulma areas are mainly used by traders.
