Introduction / History

Miskito Creoles (MC s) descended from Amerindians and African slaves who were shipwrecked on the eastern side of what is now Nicaragua. Most Miskitos reside in the southern part of the now-autonomous eastern region. Gordon (1978) says that for MCs language maintenance is the most critical factor in MC identity. MC is the second language of most Miskitos; Spanish is becoming their primary language. There are Miskito subgroups.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Miskitos have their own musical style, prahura. It is used in ceremonies. Another example of their musical style is the upbeat winamba style. Afro-Caribbean styles influence their music. Along with the music, they have round dances and traditional songs.

Due to their relative isolation, the Miskitos have retained their language and culture more effectively than other indigenous peoples in Central America. They grow black beans, corn, and fish for their food. Some travel to different places and hire themselves out as divers for lobster and conch. This is dangerous work.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They are either Roman Catholic or Protestant. The Moravian Church has had a profound influence on them for over 100 years.

What Are Their Needs?

Unless there is a united effort and institutional support of Miskito language maintenance and development, they may lose their language in the decades to come.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Lord to put a hedge of protection around the Miskito people, especially in the workplace.
Pray for revival to hit their families and churches, leading hundreds to take Christ to other parts of Latin America and Africa.
Pray for Miskito disciples to disciple others.
